Respro Hump Backpack Hi-Viz Cover -- costs about £18

My rating:

What is the 'sale pitch' for this item:

This product is meant to be a simple and unique product, performing several functions at the same time. The Hump™ fits simply over an existing rucksack and fastens around its waist.

Features:
• Scotchlite material
• Mesh pocket
• Two Day-Glo colour materials
• Fits 20 - 60 litres rucksacks
• Elasticated edging
• Simple fixing device

Benefits:
• No need to buy a product specific bag
• Suitable for most rucksacks
• Clings to donor bag
• Makes you highly visible

What is the 'truth' about this item:

Well, for the first month or so, this backpack did pretty much live up to its sales pitch. The only real downside was that, as this version is not waterproof, it gets wet in rainy conditions and quickly starts to add a bad odour to the backpack it is surrounding if not dried off properly. The biggest benefit of this product is that it made my black backpack highly visible.

However, and this is the real catch, after about 3 months of use, the cheap popper system which is used to fasten the product to the backpack broke. I tried fastening the product by tieing the remaining ends to the backpack, but this meant it was even harder to get it dried out if it became wet. In the end, this product ended up in the garbage.

What is the 'bottom line':

If you have a dark pack back and want to be more visible, then this is one product to consider. The main downsides are that it gets wet and the fastening system breaks in a few months time, requiring you to find an alternative solution...or buy another one. A good alternative may be to buy a high-vis backpack so you don't need a cover, or to add reflective add-ons to your existing backpack.
